Futuring-in-Context
In Malawi, a complex interplay of political, economic, social, and environmental factors shapes its trajectory. Challenges include political representation struggles, an agriculture-dependent economy vulnerable to shocks, perpetuating poverty and youth unemployment, and environmental issues like deforestation and water scarcity. Balancing freedom of expression with restrictive laws in media and communication is delicate. Cultural values emphasize respect and deference, particularly towards elders, though societal shifts towards democracy and youth empowerment are notable. Empowering youth through education, entrepreneurship, and civic engagement is vital for Malawi’s development. Addressing governance, promoting sustainable growth, and environmental conservation are crucial for a more inclusive and just society rooted in democratic values.

Futures Literacy Lab
Malawi Polak Game
Our first experiment in the Futures Literacy Lab was designed to explore futures orientations. Malawian youth were invited to share if they thought the futures would be better or worse, and to choose an avatar that represents them in the year 2035. A vast majority of youth participants thought they futures are brighter and to varying degrees, they could influence them. Images of strength, wisdom, and leadership include: elephant, lion, eagle, CEO, diplomat, and politician.

Probable Futures 2035
“We get lifted by lifting others”
| Malawian youth are often seen as liabilities, not assets and thus are not treated with a level of regard that helps them nurture their capacities for autonomy and leadership. They face broad challenges and have limited opportunities. Perhaps this is a reflection of the broader picture: Malawi, a nation, “still colonized”, needs to strive to function fully independently and support youth in becoming self-reliant as well. |
Desirable Futures 2035
“From Dependence to Interdependence”
Prosperous youth futures depend on the youth themselves taking responsibility to develop Malawi. A mindset change is required – the government should realise youth potential, and nurture it. Youth should rely on the government to provide essential protections and opportunities for growth and with a stable foundation for sustainable living, aim to contribute meaningfully to assuming leadership of their country’s evolution.
Reframe: “The Mycelium Network Future”

Malawian youth explored new imaginaries through metaphors like “All in One, One for All” and “One Feeling, One Move. One Mind, One Dream” In a borderless world, all are global citizens. Traditional African Ukama values of relatedness and interdependence with the biophysical world, the cosmos, and past, present, and future ancestors are experiencing a resurgence in 2035. Malawian youth feel nurtured through the Mycelium Network and are buoyed by a sense dignity and worth in the inherent vitality of their contributions.
